Title of Job: Data Center Designer

Job Description: The Savvis Data Center Designer shall lead design, research and develop and manage technical and operational standards for all mission critical systems that power Savvis world class data centers. This position is responsible for working across multi-disciplinary teams in identifying, evaluating and selecting architectures, technologies and design standards that will meet targeted business and operational performance needs.

Position Objectives and responsibilities:

Creating Data Center Designs and Standards that meet the following criteria:-
Product Development Specifications.
Operational Supportability.
Capital Efficient build methodology.
Green build/operation technologies within capital efficient parameters
Stay abreast of and promote, educate and enforce Data Center design best practices, corporate vision and policy.
Provide technical expertise and end to end engineering solutions for all Data Center mission critical infrastructure including:
Electrical Utilities
Prime and standby electrical generator systems of all fuel types
Rotary and static UPS Systems
Low-medium voltage distribution
Open and closed transition automatic transfer schemes
Distributed vs. Catcher electrical redundancy methods
Co-generation solutions
Large DC and Battery plants
Chilled Water plants
Air handling systems
Free Cooling systems including both direct and indirect air side economizers and evaporative cooling
Air segregation systems and containment
BMS and control systems
Architectural and structural design
Conduct meetings with multiple contractors to support vendor selection process for Architect, Mechanical and Electrical Principles, and General Contractor.
Working Closely with Procurement teams for vendor selection process.
Participate in the site selection process for corporate expansion. Evaluate the requirements and provide assessment of specific sites.
Participate in client meetings with the ability to present Savvis design & build standards in a clear and concise manner in both technical and executive/laymans terms
Working closely with the other members of the Data Center Acquisition & Expansion Team providing timely updates on the progress of the build schedule.
Review and approve the development and implementation of electrical/mechanical standards and operations guides.
Provide assistance to Product Development teams for design, business case creation, and project planning/implementation.
Work with Data Centre Operations Team to ensure the product delivered meets the standards and intent of the project and can be supported.
Represent SAVVIS, Inc. in a professional and positive manner in a client and peer setting.

Required skills:
Proven background in design, construction and commissioning of mission critical facilities.
Understand recognized Architecture, Engineering, and Contractor project delivery conventions including roles, responsibilities, document development and control, commissioning and turn-over through operations.
Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously utilizing and directing external engineering firms as required.
Familiar with conventional and emerging technologies employed in Data Center designs.
Strong background in the following:- industrial controls, fire detection and life safety systems, High voltage and medium voltage power generation and distribution systems; Mechanical and Cooling systems; Building Management Systems; industry conventions; codes, standards and practices; and major OEM offerings.
Ability to work in virtual teams in highly mobile environments with global assignments.
Ability to effectively translate highly technical systems and concepts to a broad range of technical and non-technical audiences.
Expert knowledge of architectural, mechanical and electrical codes and industry standards.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Excellent problem solving skills.
Strong project management, trouble-shooting, analytical and organizational skills.
Strong computer skills including MS Office and AutoCAD.
The ability to work in a team environment and contribute openly to the success of the team.
The ability to mentor individuals and teach technical excellence in managing mission critical systems.
Familiarity of UBC, NEC and local regulatory codes, guidelines, and permit processes.

Desired skills:
Direct plant operations experience, or experience with operating engineers who have provided design feedback.
Experience in engineering economics, or working with business analysts in providing value-based solutions.
Reliability Centered Maintenance analysis and implementation.
Ability to apply engineering principles to international markets.
Familiar with ASHRAE, NFPA, NETA, IEEE, NEC, and OSHA standards.

Education or Equivalent Experience:
Minimum of 10 years experience working in Hosting or Colo Markets.
Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
